Walter Nichols Obituary

Walter Lee Nichols was born February 1, 1934 in Chappell, Nebraska to Archie Nichols and Mary Francis (McBurney) Nichols.  He passed away March 21, 2021 in Edmond, Oklahoma at the age of 87.

Walter graduated with the Wellston High School class of 1951. He went on to proudly serve his country in the United States Air Force, working in electronic supply providing communications to guidance personnel.  He later worked a few years in retail sales and as a freight solicitor for central freight line.  He spent 24 years working for the University of Texas Medical Branch retiring in 1996.  For over 30 years he served as a part-time deputy sheriff for Galveston County Texas obtaining the rank of lieutenant.

In 1952 Walter married Mary Evelyn (Bozarth) to which 2 children were raised, Roy and Cheryl.  He later married Barbara Janice (Hosea) sharing the next 40 years together until her death.  Walter served as president of the Chamber of Commerce in Dickinson, Texas in 1962, and a member of the Wellston American Legion Post 61 having proudly attended his last meeting the day before being admitted into the hospital.

Walter was preceded in death by his parents, Archie and Mary Nichols; 2 wives, Mary (Bozarth) Nichols and Barbara (Hosea) Nichols; sisters, Helen Crane, Florence Richardson, Betty Meyer; brother, Paul Nichols.  Survivors include his children, Roy Nichols and wife Karen of New York, Cheryl Soares and husband Mike of Houston, Christi Vanderlip and husband Danny of Wellston, Leslee Nichols of the home, Kellis Nichols of Wellston; (6) grandchildren, (1) great-grandson; brother, Melvin Nichols and wife Helen of Bartlesville.

A funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, March 25, 2021 at the Lehman Funeral Home Chapel officiated by Reverend Dennis Osborne with interment following in the Wellston Cemetery.  Services are under the direction of Lehman Funeral Home of Wellston.
