Vern Elmer Helms, Jr.

Vern Elmer Helms, Jr. was born one of seven children, May 3, 1959 in Ponca City to Vern Sr. and Dovie (Hanna) Helms.  He passed away September 25, 2021 at the age of 62.

Vern grew up in Ponca City and moved to Davenport in 1986.  He worked for 25 years at Farm Fresh, now Hiland Dairy.  For the past 11 years he has worked at Kinder Morgan as an E&C Technician.  If Vern was not working at his job, he was working at home.  He enjoyed helping others, especially his children, their friends, neighbors, or anyone in need.  He could fix anything, or he could walk you through how to fix it yourself over the phone if he could not be there himself.

Vern enjoyed NASCAR and was able to attend races.  He cherished and loved his wife, Beckey, and loved his children, grandchildren, and his family. 

Vern was preceded in death by his parents, Vern, Sr. and Dovie Helms; siblings, Charlie Caudill, Leslie Caudill, Vivian Rhodd, Pamela Howell, and Darrel Caudill.  Survivors include his loving wife of 43 years, Beckey (James) Helms of the home; daughters, Leslie Helms of Ponca City, Jessica Porter and her partner, Sabrina Odem of Cushing; six grandchildren, Bryce Lockwood, Jaden Lockwood and wife Brittany, Hannah Anderson, Alyssa Anderson, Maddy Porter, Elias Vern Odom; two bonus grandchildren, Zaylee Odom and Skye Odom; great-grandson Kayson Ramsey; sister, Loyce Crow and husband Darrell of Winfield Kansas; along with a huge extended family and host of friends.

Visitation will be at the First Baptist Church of Davenport Tuesday, from 3:00 – 8:00 p.m.  Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, September 29, 2021 at the church with Brother Mike Mitchell officiating and interment following in the Avery Cemetery in Avery.  Arrangements are under the direction of Lehman Funeral Home of Wellston.
