Trần Văn Thưởng was born April 17, 1940 in Huế, Vietnam. He passed away January 19, 2021 at his home in Norman, OK at the age of 80.
He served in the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN), graduating in 1963 with the 17th class of the Vietnamese National Military Academy, eventually attaining the rank of Lt. Col., and was awarded a Bronze Star for valor in 1970. He first came to America in 1974 to attend the US Army Command and General Staff College in Ft. Leavenworth, KS for additional training. With the fall of Saigon in 1975 forcing him to retire from his military career, he turned his attention to mathematics. He earned his B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. from Washburn University, University of Kansas, and The University of Utah, respectively. After receiving his Ph.D. in 1986, he taught briefly at The College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minnesota and the University of Minnesota-Duluth. Finally, Dr. Thuong served as a mathematics professor at Missouri Southern State University in Joplin, MO from 1987 until his retirement in 2009.
While his youth allowed him to, he enjoyed staying active through skiing, tennis, and martial arts. In his retirement, he enjoyed researching and writing firsthand accounts about his experiences in Vietnam. He lived a disciplined life and was very devoted to his family, retiring to Norman so he could continue to mentor his son Scott Van Thuong, now of Pittsburg, KS.
Dr. Thuong will be interred in the Forest Park Cemetery in Joplin, Missouri at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 23, 2021. Arrangements are under the direction of Lehman Funeral Home of Wellston.
