Sondra Jane (Arthur) LeGrande

Sondra Jane (Arthur) LeGrande, age 78, passed away peacefully on February 11, 2022, in Edmond, Oklahoma.  She was born on April 7, 1943, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, to William Ramsey Arthur, Sr., and Mary Jane (Gray) Arthur.  She was a proud resident of Luther, Oklahoma.  She married Richard Jay LeGrande, Sr., on November 28, 1962, at the First Christian Church in Luther, Oklahoma.  Richard was the love of her life for the 41 years together as well as the last 18 years without him on this earth.  

She had an all-encompassing career as a wife, mother, and teacher.  Sondra graduated from Luther High School in 1961 and became a certified medical pathology lab technician in 1962.  She stayed home with her children and then worked side by side with Richard at LeGrande Lumber and Hardware from 1975 until she started college at the University of Central Oklahoma where she earned her Bachelor of Education degree in 1993 at the age of 50.  She began her career as a Special Education teacher at Edmond Santa Fe High School.  She retired from Edmond Public Schools in May 2014 after 21 years of service.  She came out of retirement in August 2014 to work for Luther Public Schools to help establish a High School Transition Program.  Sondra brought great joy, meaning, and happiness to all the special lives that she touched teaching and she made an impact in the lives of young teachers she mentored, still impacting the lives of many today in her profession as a Special Education teacher.  She touched the lives of so many with her love and kindness, she will be forever missed. 

She is preceded in death by her parents, William Ramsey Arthur, Sr., and Mary Jane Arthur, sister, Karen Ann “Kay” Bois, and sister-in-law, Debra Kay Arthur.  She is also preceded in death by her husband, Richard Jay LeGrande, Sr.

She is survived by her daughter and sons-in-law, Leigh Ann Jackson and Leland Jackson and Kevin Scott Stewart; son and daughter-in-law, Richard Jay LeGrande, Jr., and Shauna Rose LeGrande; and daughter and son-in-law, Mary LeGrande Thionnet and Jeff Michael Thionnet.  She loved and adored her 10 grandchildren, Justin Lee Stewart, Stephanie Lynn Bailey, Keenan Scott Stewart, Lauren Nicole LeGrande, Thomas Dean Stewart, Jacob Charles Thionnet, Elle Ramsey Thionnet, Luke LeGrande Thionnet, Conrad Richard LeGrande, and William Ralph LeGrande.  In addition, she referred to Haley Lynne Richardson and Wesley Michael Jackson as her “bonus” grandchildren.  She was blessed with 2 great-grandchildren, Maren Inez Bailey and Benson Thomas Bailey.  Also, brother, William Ramsey Arthur, Jr., and brother-in-law, Gene Bois.

Family, friends, and others are invited to the First Christian Church in Luther, Oklahoma, at 10:00 am on Saturday, February 26, 2022, to reminisce and honor the life of Sondra.
