Robert Verdell Wooden, Jr was born January 10, 1942 in Chandler, Oklahoma to Robert Verdell, Sr. and Anna Elizabeth (Miller) Wooden. He passed away on July 10, 2018 at his home in Wellston, Oklahoma.
Robert Graduated from Chandler High School in 1960 and earned a scholarship to play both Football and Baseball at Connors Jr. College then went on to Southwestern Oklahoma State University to play Baseball where he earned his Degree.
Robert proudly served his country in the Oklahoma National Guard before returning home as a Teacher and Coach for more than 35 years. He taught History and Government and earned Coach of the Year Honors in Oklahoma in 1972 at US Grant High School. He also went on to teach and coach at Putnam City High School, McCloud, OK, Valley Center, KS, Chandler, OK, Perkins, OK, Woodward, OK and finally retiring from Midwest City's Monroney Jr. High School. He touched the lives of so many young men and women, many of whom have credited him with life lessons they passed on to their children.
After retiring he traveled the country playing very competitive Senior Softball into his early 70's including trips to Las Vegas, Nevada and San Antonio, Texas for National Championship Tournaments. His team won the National Championship for the over 60 Division in 2005 and he was named to the All-Tournament Team. He also loved and maintained a farm for many years with buffalo, longhorn cattle, llamas, goats, donkeys, horses and even peacocks. He enjoyed to be outside working and loved the peace and quiet of country living.
Robert is preceded in death by his parents; his sons' mother, Ruth Ann Bodenhamer Wooden; and his wife, Myra Barnes Wooden. Survivors include his sons, Steven Zane Wooden and Robert Jason Wooden; granddaughter, Makinley Elizabeth Wooden; brother, George Wooden; sister, Jewel Carter along with other family and friends.
A memorial service was held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, July 13, 2018 at the New Zion Cemetery in Chandler. Arrangements were under the direction of Lehman Funeral Home of Wellston, OK
