Richard Lee Stewart

Richard Lee Stewart was born August 3, 1955, in Seattle, Washington, to Ruth Barrow-Stewart and Jake H Stewart.  His battle with ALS ended on August 1, 2026, surrounded by all of his children and grandchildren, at the age of 70.

After graduating from Woodward High School in 1974, Richard married Carolyn Forrest and 3 children were born.  In 1995 he met the love of his life Tammy and welcomed her two children into his life.

Richard was a craftsman.  His profession was a manual machinist for close to 40 years.  He loved shaping objects from steel and was a meticulous wood worker.  He loved constructing buildings, remodeling homes and building furniture.   He loved old muscle cars and collected model cars.  He  taught himself how to repair his own vehicles as a teenager and passed that love on to his sons.  He loved teaching his children, grandchildren and any other that wanted to learn any of his skills. 

He loved to travel with his wife marking off several destinations from their bucket list before he became too weak to hook up their  5th wheel.  He battled with ALS for 4 years and fought hard to keep the disease from taking away his independence, but it was relentless and cruel.  It took his ability to work with his hands, his speech,  eating, his walk and then his life.

Richard was preceded in death by his mother, Ruth.  He was survived by his father Jake; his wife Tammy; 5 children, Richard Stewart, Jr. and wife Kim of Redwater, Tx, Jim Stewart of Chandler, Ok, and Peggy Stewart-Bussinger and husband Tyson of Woodward, Ok, Lisa Burger-Smith of Midwest City, OK and Melvin Burger and life partner Kathy Cozart of Del City, OK;  10 grandchildren; Mikayla Dickey of Midwest City, OK, Kyren Covalt-Lehman of Shawnee, Ok, Trevor Covalt of Edmond, Ok, Kelsey Stewart of Redwater, TX, Kaley Stewart-Harris, Texarkana, TX, Zachary Ramirez of Woodward, Ok Zaviar Smith of Shawnee, Destiney Stewart of Chandler, Ok ,  Hunter Stewart of Chandler and Sophee Bussinger of Woodward, OK; 5 great-grandchildren; 2 sisters, Deby Stewart-Gregg of Denver, Colorado and Kathe Stewart-Schmidt of Wellston, Ok; aunts, uncles, cousins and many friends. 

He was much loved by his family, his friends and all that knew him.  He will be greatly missed.  A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, August 8, 2026, at Lehman Funeral Home. Arrangements are under the direction of Lehman Funeral Home of Wellston.
