John Blane Bates Obituary

Command Sergeant Major John Bates was born October 31, 1953, in Norman, Oklahoma to Dan and Edna (Dunnam) Bates.  He passed away on April 14, 2026, at his home in Wellston at the age of 72.


John graduated from Carney High School in 1971.  He is survived by his two daughters, son and beloved wife of over 50 years, Susie Bates.  He was a member of the Oklahoma Army National Guard for 28 years where he was the top enlisted member of the 160th Field Artillery as well as 45th Infantry Brigade and a graduate of the Sergent Major Academy.


John was saved by Jesus Christ at age 11 and served the Lord until his death.  He was a long-time member of the Missionary Baptist Church of Wellston and First Baptist Church of Carney.


John’s work as CSM of the 45th Infantry Brigade was well appreciated as well as recognized by his peers.  His massive devotion and efforts in support of the brigade were well known.  He led his enlisted personal in preparation to serve in Afghanistan as well as Iraq in an exemplary manner.  The soldiers of the brigade are better prepared today due to his massive efforts preparing them for combat.


There will be a memorial service in John’s honor at 2:00 p.m. Monday, April 20, 2026, in the Lehman Funeral Home Chapel.  Arrangements are under the direction of Lehman Funeral Home of Wellston.
