David Patterson Grady was born March 20, 1940 in Glasgow, Scotland to Benjamin Adams Grady and Williamina Chrissy (Irving) Grady. He passed away at home in Wellston, the morning of March 9, 2024 with his wife, Sandra by his side. David was 83.
David, his mom, and younger sister, Marion sailed on the Georgic in 1953 to join their dad in Detroit, Michigan who came a year and a half earlier. After graduation from Hazel Park High School in 1958 and after a few years exploring the United States, he settled in Mineola, Texas but Scotland remained in his heart. While in Mineola, David was welcomed into the Nazarene Church where he accepted Christ as his savior and was baptized. This led to his desire to attend Bethany Nazarene College, where he received his bachelor’s degree to spread God’s word.
His desire to help others led him to evangelism, helping juveniles through the court system and following his own recovery helping others find the path to their own recovery.
David met Sandra and they married on November 16, 1985 in Nashville, Tennessee. They began an outpatient program which continued until they moved to Wellston in 1994. David began the next chapter of his life being a schoolteacher at Wellston Schools until his retirement. After Sandra joined him in retirement they enjoyed reading and the life they built together.
David was preceded in death by his parents, uncle Kenny Niven. Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Sandra; sister, Marion Grayer of Georgia; stepdaughters, Deanna Canelos, Janell Oberly and their families which include 5 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren; along with many nieces, nephews and life-long friends.
